Soto Zen Bon Festival

June 28 @ 5:00 pm10:00 pm
Free

The Soto Zen Bon Festival is a vibrant traditional celebration in Kauai, a remembrance of Hawaii’s rich Japanese American heritage, rooted in over five generations of tradition on Kauai. Held on temple grounds under lantern-lit skies, this joyful summer event brings people of all ages together through the rhythmic beats of taiko drums, colorful bon odori dances, and a spirit of remembrance and unity.

With its festive theme, “Let’s Bon Dance!”, the festival honors ancestors while inviting everyone—locals, visitors, and descendants alike—to connect with culture, community, and history. Lively music, cultural performances, historical exhibits, and mouthwatering food like the famous Flying Saucers make the festival a uniquely Hawaiian experience.

Backed by national and local support, including grants from the NEA and Kilohana, the Soto Zen Bon Festival not only preserves cherished traditions but also celebrates the island’s diverse plantation-era roots. It’s a homecoming of heart, heritage, and shared humanity. A traditional celebration in Kauai, remembering the ancient traditions of Hawaii.
