Spiritual Importance

In the early 1900s, Japanese immigrants seeking solace and connection in a foreign land created 88 shrines along a hillside path–an homage to the famed pilgrimage route to Shikoku, Japan. Each shrine is a step toward enlightenment, a quiet invitation to pause, reflect, and listen to the deeper voice within. Following the traditions and beliefs of Buddhism.

The Lawai International Center serves as a bridge between Eastern and Western traditions and between the material and spiritual. Volunteers who care for the land do so as a devotion, guided by gratitude and love. The center’s mission is to promote harmony and compassion, radiating such values through every stone, tree, and smile.

History

Long before the arrival of Japanese immigrants, Lawai Valley was recognized by Native Hawaiians as a place of powerful spiritual energy. It was considered a site of healing, meditation, and sacred connection with the land and ancestors.

Later on, in the early 1900s, Japanese immigrants came to Hawaii to work on sugar plantations. Many of them settled Kauai and brought with them their spiritual and cultural traditions. The 88 shrines replicating the pilgrimage route in Shikoku. The shrines were meant to replicate this journey–symbolically, spiritually, and emotionally. It was a way for the immigrants to maintain their faith and cultural identity in a distant land, and to seek spiritual grounding amid the challenges of plantation life.
