Before Your Dive

When visiting the reef, it’s essential to remember that these delicate ecosystems rely on respect and care to thrive. Here are some crucial things people should avoid to ensure the reef remains healthy, and to bring the most enjoyment to everyone:

  • Avoid Littering or Polluting: Never leave trash or plastic waste behind in the water. Marine animals can mistake litter for food, which can be harmful or even fatal. Always pack out everything you bring with you, and consider bringing a trash bag to collect any debris you might encounter.
  • Avoid Harmful Sunscreen: Many common sunscreens contain chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which can be toxic to marine life. These chemicals can cause coral bleaching and disrupt the reproductive cycles of marine organisms. Opt for reef-safe sunscreens that are free from these chemicals, typically mineral-based with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
  • Do Not Touch the Coral: Corals are living organisms that are highly sensitive. Touching them can damage their fragile structures and make them more susceptible to disease.
